If you want to make sure they know you're coming, email one of the leaders below (I don't want to post their contact info publicly, so check the Bagley family directory), or Brooke or Lexy.   p.s. Volunteers gratefully accepted.

Let's Move - March update

Ms. Filep's class wrestled the Golden Sneaker from Ms. Green's class in March with a whopping 63 points.  Can they hold onto it for April?

In March, 58 students earned 79 charms.  15 students earned 6 tallies or more in March - you can earn 1 tally for walking or biking to school on your own, joining a Walking School Bus, or walking 4 laps on the track.  We have some very eager bees who are walking to school and then walking LOTS of laps.  Well done!

Bagley Bees are really moving on Friday mornings!

January was a big success!

Bagley Bees have been walking together every Friday morning.  The  results are in, and they're impressive:

* 124 kids walked at least one Friday last month  - that's 34% of the school!
* 40 kids joined a Walking School Bus, and walked a total of 61 miles to school on Fridays.
* 41 miles were logged with Mr. Millsap on the track.
* 91 charms are being distributed by Kid Mail (check those backpacks!)

Kids can earn points for joining a Walking School Bus (1 point per Friday morning) and/or walking the track with Mr. Millsap on Friday mornings (1 point per four laps).  3 points = 1 charm.

The Golden Sneaker will be awarded to the classroom with the most points, at an upcoming Monday Morning Meeting - which class will host this coveted prize for the next month?  Stay tuned...

Let's Move on Friday Mornings!

We had a huge success on our first Let's Move, last Friday!  Lots of new faces on the Walking Bus routes, and dozens of kids walking the track.  Please bear with us as we work out the kinks.  The charms are really cool, and the kids are going to be thrilled!

Let's Move program details are below.

-------------------------------
Bees will have a couple of Friday morning options to get moving and help their class earn the Golden Sneaker Award for that month as well as an individual backpack charm:
>>> JOIN A WALKING SCHOOL BUS
Kids can join one of our three established Walking School Bus routes.  The "buses" work just like the yellow ones - "bus" (a group of adults and kids walking) will arrive at the stop listed at the assigned time and will pick up any walkers as it continues en route to school.  Parents are welcome to join for the walk or can drop off as we have enough parents to walk the group safely.  It's a ton of fun for the kids to walk with a big mass of their buddies and meet some new friends.  Bus routes can be found here: http://g.co/maps/vby5v
 1 walk to school = 1 point
If you'd like to organize a new bus route, please let us know.  We'd love to add a couple of routes.
>>> WALK THE TRACK WITH MR. MILLSAP
Kids can join Mr. Millsap on the track at 9am to walk before school.
4 laps = 1 point
Please note: we need a parent volunteer to walk and be at the track every other Friday to give Mr. Millsap a little relief.  Please let us know if you can help.
Walkers will be counted by their Walking School Bus driver, Mr. Millsap, or parent volunteer at the track.  At the end of the month, individual backpack charms (feet, bikes or buses with feet) will be awarded to students who have walked (on the track or with their WSB) at least 3 Fridays that month (or 2 if there are only 3 Fridays in the month such as January).  Additionally, classroom totals will be tallied and the classroom with the highest number of walkers will receive the Golden Sneaker for that month.  The Sneaker will travel to the winning classroom each month.
Finally, kids can earn double points if they participated in a Walking School Bus AND walked the track on a Friday morning.
We are working on logistics for program expansion, so we can have Walking School Buses on other mornings, and address the needs of kids who can't make either of the current options work.  Stay tuned!

Walking Wednesday WOW!!

We had more than 150 kids walk to Daniel Bagley or before-school care this morning (possibly more, but it was tricky to count amidst the chaos).  That's more than 1/3 of the school!

Most of the pre-set routes started about a mile away from school, but there were kids walking almost 1.5 miles this morning.  The average commute for Bagley families is ~ 1/2 mile, so as a community, we probably logged around 75 kid-miles this morning.  That's approximately 7500 calories burned, and 75 lbs of CO2 saved by not driving!  (These statistics are a little broad-brush, but you get the point)

Many thanks to the dozens of parents and caregivers who walked today either on their own or as part of a group, and especially to our tireless and safety-conscious volunteers and route leaders:  Lynn, Mary, Debby, Erin, Rebecca, June, Sue, Camille, Cecile,  Marisa, Kim, Carole, Clara and Lisa.  I apologize if I've left anyone off the list!

Thank you also to our program and event sponsors:  Jen at Feet First & Safe Routes to Schools, Julie from the Cascade Bicycle Club, and Jim with the City of Seattle's Aurora Safety Traffic Project.

If you'd like your student to walk regularly with a group, our Walking School Bus is happening year-round, on Friday mornings (Thursdays on Erin's route): bagleywalkingschoolbus.blogspot.com.

If you walk on your own and/or on other mornings, and would like a safety vest, bright orange flag, or a Walk to School green sign, let us know - we have a few extras.

Also, look for our nifty walk/bike-to-school charm bracelets for the cool commuting kids, starting next week.

--Lexy & Brooke

p.s. If you have photos, stories, or #s of walkers, please send them in so we can compile.  Thanks!

Walk to School Day - this Wednesday!

Join millions of other students from around the world as we walk to school!

Routes are shown on the map above.  No need to RSVP, just join the group as they pass by.  We're walking RAIN OR SHINE.

Handstamps and prizes for all walkers!  Water bottles, coloring books or bike charms.

Want a cool Walk to School lollipop sign for your student?  Look for Brooke or Lexy at drop-off or pick-up over the next few days.  We'll do our best to get there with enough for everyone.

Follow up from last week's Fast Feet Friday

We are picking up steam and the kids are getting the hang of the safety rules.  After the west & southwest routes converged at 77th & Linden, we had ~21 kids and 11 parents, and stopped traffic on Aurora (hooray!).    There were four or five families in the Northeast bus, as well.  All without advertising!

More safety vests are available, and safety flags are coming soon.  We have oodles and oodles of the green lollipop signs - will be distributing these for walk-to-school day.

Volunteers needed!  We need help with Walk-to-School Day on October 5:
* photographers
* people to staff the prize table

And help with Walking School Bus in general:
* Come up with clever names for walking days, like Walking Wednesdays or Fuel-free fast feet fridays
* someone to help update the route maps and this blog/website (or tell Lexy what content to change/add)
* develop a method of tracking walkers- is weekly reporting by leaders enough?  Should we be auditing the whole school?
Design an incentive program, like the necklaces with feet charms you add for lots of walking.  How to track?  What rewards?  Lots of options!
* making stickers using the walking school bus logo
* acquiring hand stamps for walkers
Create a fun one-page scavenger hunt that walkers can use (no prizes, just for fun)?

First Fast Feet Friday report

We had a pretty good turnout for our maiden voyage, considering the lack of advertising during this trial period!  On the southwest route, we ended up with 12-14 kids (which includes a preschooler or two).

Hot pink vests and some bright orange flags were distributed.  I loved the handmade school bus sign!  There was some route and time adjustment - if you have any thoughts, report them to Brooke.  We'll update the route map accordingly.

Safety issues to address:
* we need more vests and flags.
* Keep kids sandwiched between grownups for safety... could be a challenge, but if we repeat it frequently enough, it should rub in.
* Probably at least three parents needed on the southwest group to handle the spreading out issue.
* Kids must wait for a parent at intersections and alleys, and driveways (especially near Bagley)

Any thoughts?
